Psyche is the Greek word for “soul” and also sometimes “butterfly”. The goddess Psyche is often depicted in folklore as a woman with butterfly wings. As I drew this piece, I was thinking about butterflies and our little butterfly, the Psyche spacecraft. One of Psyche’s instruments is a magnetometer and the team has to plan for if Psyche has a tiny or a huge magnetic field, or even none at all. It is such a strange adventure when you are going somewhere you know almost nothing about. Some butterflies actually navigate using magnetic fields – I wonder what they would think of Psyche.
