Genre/Medium: Cast iron/nickel/cobalt sculpture
This piece is a simulation of a nickel-iron asteroid made from scrap steel, nickel ( from nickel welding rod and Canadian pure nickel coins ), cobalt, and few fragments of the Canyon Diablo meteorite. The ingredients were melted in an “Aristotle Furnace” which is a small cylindrical furnace that looks like a blast furnace but much much much smaller ( less than 2 feet tall). The heat is generated by hardwood charcoal with air blast from a small shopvac. There is no crucible – the metal just flows into the bottom of the furnace to solidify.
