About the work:
My first project for Psyche Inspired is called Inside Psyche, which is inspired off of the intro from the Netflix animated show “Inside Job.” The intro is very unique compared to other animated shows, with a lot of dynamic movements and transitions that I was interested in. I absolutely love art and animation, and I was determined to create an animated piece around the Psyche spacecraft. Inside Job happens to be a show I adore (I’m still sad it was canceled), and I thought it would be nice to commemorate the cartoon through a Psyche revamp. I attempted to utilize the same style as the intro to present viewers an animation/animatic type video that would show some of the scientific instruments on Psyche, some construction/development scenes, and the actual launch sequence showing each individual segment. My goal was to make the animation not only engaging but to make it informative whilst also telling a story.
With Psyche itself, I was intrigued by the instruments of the spacecraft and primarily wanted to highlight said features, including the multispectral imagers and the magnetometer. I was not able to fit all of the instruments into the animation, however I made sure to at least briefly mention them in a Psyche spacecraft diagram in the beginning of the animation. I also very much enjoy the colors of the Psyche logo, so I created a palette around those colors making sure to incorporate some nice cool blue colors that matched relatively well. At first I used colors only from the logo but quickly realized the colors in the animation wouldn’t look great, so making an updated palette definitely helped.
For this project I hand drew all of the frames in Procreate and edited them on an editing app on my iPad.
Psyche Inspired is a program that brings undergraduate students from any discipline or major together to share the excitement, innovation, and scientific and engineering content of NASA’s Psyche mission with the public in new ways through artistic and creative works. This year’s Psyche Inspired cohort is known as the Iridium Class. These works are posted in the gallery and highlighted on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.
